Abilene Food Guide

By Daniel McKay, Associate Pastor at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church

Welcome to Abilene! We’re thrilled to host this year’s Annual Meeting of Texas Baptists in the heart of the Big Country. Whether you’re in town for a few days or lingering a little longer, you’ll find that Abilene’s hospitality extends far beyond the church walls. From coffee to dinner, our local places offer plenty of ways to connect, refuel, and enjoy the city.

Coffee & Conversation
Start your morning—or spark an afternoon conversation—at one of the city’s standout coffee spots. Monk’s has long been an Abilene institution, known for its laid-back vibes and locally roasted beans. Sway Cafe brings specialty lattes, a cozy setting, and a full menu if you’re hungry. And Statesman Coffee Company makes for a quick grab-and-go with excellent espresso or cold brew at multiple convenient locations.

Breakfast & Brunch
For a classic breakfast, The Flipping Egg is a nostalgic diner with great flavors, generous portions, and friendly service. Front Porch Coffee & Bakery, with two locations, combines great coffee, scratch-made breakfast items, and a bright, welcoming atmosphere. Sweet Thyme Kitchen is another strong choice—freshly made bakery items, scratch cooking, and a homey atmosphere. For something easy, The Salty Roan Bakehouse serves craft pastries with locally sourced ingredients.
If you’re craving Tex-Mex options, Hernandez Bakery, La Popular, and Mi Ranchito all deliver quality breakfast tacos and burritos, among other options.

Mexican & Tex-Mex
For Mexican food, Blue Agave is a hole-in-the-wall local favorite that offers consistently great plates—arguably the best queso in town. Taqueria Nuestro Mexico is even more unassuming, but boasts authentic flavors at great prices and a loyal following. Miguel’s Mex-Tex Café serves dependable fare in a lively setting that works well for groups—try the jalapeño bites.

Barbecue & Burgers
You can’t go anywhere in Texas without considering the barbecue, and Abilene holds its own. Jay’s BBQ Shack, named one of Texas Monthly’s Top 50 BBQ Joints in 2025, is the city’s can’t-miss spot. Jay’s nails both the classics and inventive specials with equal skill—well worth the lines that form each week. The only catch: they’re only open Wednesday through Saturday.
The Shed Market offers some of the city’s best barbecue, serving smoked-to-perfection meats and scratch-made sides in a classic meat-market setup. Sharon’s Barbeque rounds out the lineup as a longtime local institution with loyal regulars and a reputation built on consistency.
For burgers, Rockin’ Rollerz and Lucy’s are Abilene staples. Rockin’ Rollerz leans artisan with creative combinations and fresh ingredients, while Lucy’s keeps it classic with the kind of no-frills, done-right burger that never goes out of style. Both top it off with house-made milkshakes and ice cream that seal their spots among the city’s best.

Lunch & Local Favorites
For a wider range of lunch options, Cordell’s is the closest thing Abilene has to farm-to-table, serving fresh, seasonal fare in a relaxed setting. Their huge selection of specialty oils and vinegars add distinctive flavor to many dishes.
Grain Theory offers elevated pub-style food downtown, from burgers and wings to lighter salads and sandwiches, all prepared with care and local ingredients. Hickory Street Café and Bogie’s Deli are tried-and-true local favorites and, for something a little different, Caitie Pies serves savory daily specials alongside their signature desserts, a great stop for lunch and a slice of something sweet.

Dinner & Evening Dining
For dinner, Vagabond Pizza crafts wood-fired Neapolitan pies with creative combinations and a lively downtown atmosphere. For a true Texas steakhouse experience, The Beehive and Copper Creek both serve top-quality beef with the kind of warm, West Texas hospitality that defines Abilene’s charm. And if you have time for a short drive into the country, Perini Ranch Steakhouse in nearby Buffalo Gap is legendary for a reason.

Dessert
Before you call it a night, stop by Roll Shack for inventive ice cream or, if you’d rather wind down with one last coffee, take a stroll downtown and enjoy Abilene’s growing art scene with a to-go pour-over from Grain Theory.
Wherever you end up, we hope your time in Abilene is filled with good food, great conversations, and the same kind of welcome we’re grateful to extend as fellow Texas Baptists.
